Luray Virgina for your next vacation

Hank and I began the search for the perfect location for our dream and adventure of owning a bed and breakfast in 1998. On the weekends we would get in the car and head to various mountainous locations. After over a 2 year search we feel in love with Luray, Virginia and the surrounding area. Within about a 30 mile radius you can do and see just about anything your heart desires.

When we found the location for Piney Hill Bed & Breakfast we just knew we had found home. We named the B & B after the name of the road which had only been named and paved probably 3-4 years before we arrived. The house was perfectly situated at the top of a hill with rolling hills scattered with cows and bulls and mountain views in every direction. Our families couldn't understand why we wanted the house since it was in such disrepair, but we had the vision. We said, "just look at these views", they replied, "just look at this dump", LOL Now they come to visit and I think they might be just a little envious. It took a lot of hard work, but we transformed the old country place into somewhere folks could just come in relax, just like in the old days when life was simple. You know... for the folks that work hard and desire some down time.

The nice thing about coming out to the Shenandoah Valley is that you can do as much or as little as you'd like. Sometimes it's just nice to sit out on the porch rockers gazing at the Skyline Drive views. The sky surrounding them seem to change frequently before your eyes. I've witnessed a beautiful harvest moon; it looked as though it was just sitting, resting on top of the mountain. There isn't a lot of light pollution in the country side so you can take in the most spectacular star views. You might enjoy doing that from a cozy seat in the hot tub on a chilly evening.

If you haven't seen the Luray Caverns then you must go. They are beautiful!! It just amazes me that something so spectacular could be under the ground. It is an hour guided tour and one that you will never forget. You can also see the cars and transportation from over the last 100 years. I just love the way that it seems to take you back in time.

The Shenandoah Valley is filled with VA wineries scattered along the hill sides. Many of our guests really enjoy Gadino Cellars and Rappahannock Cellars. You'll have to visit a few to decide your favorites.

The Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park are amazing. You can drive along the top of the mountain, stopping off and just enjoy the views from the overlooks or you can go on a hike; short or long. The trails are nicely marked as to not get lost, plus you can see such wildlife as bear, deer and wild turkey. The waterfall hikes are a real treat and well worth the hike too. There are several throughout the Drive.

The Shenandoah River is a great spot to enjoy splashing around on a hot summer day. The Shenandoah River Outfitters offers tube, canoe and kayak rentals. You can even get a tube to pack a cooler for lunch on the river. Not far from the Shenandoah River is the Fort Valley Stable. They offer 1 hour, 1 1/2 hour, half and full day rides along the George Washington National Forest. They have very nice horses which they take very good care of.

The downtown area of Luray offers some very nice lunch and dining options. You can enjoy from down home cooking to casual fine dining. One of our favorites is the Artisan Grill. Their food is always good and the service is second to none. We also have the BB & T Performing Arts Center and a nice movie cinema with first rate movies.

If you venture just outside of the town of Luray you might enjoy the Green Valley Book Fair which offers books at a drastically discounted price several times a year. You can also go back in time and enjoy a play at the Shakespearian play at the Blackfriar Theater in Staunton, VA, visit Monticello in Charlottesville, VA or witness GOD's creation by touring the Natural Bridge.

Okay.. I could ramble on and on about the area, but I'll save more for later. We hope to see you soon!
